not much going on.

2007-03-21

My day was from hell. I seem to be getting less and less patient with people lately. Maybe most of it stems from being stretched too thin. I'm a PC technician by day, so I have to troubleshoot a LOT of computers. And I get the STRANGEST things out there. Sometimes fixes come easy, sometimes they take research. I never liked the "just reformat the PC" because the first thought is "what if it happens again? Then what? You've NEVER solved it, just brushed it under the rug."

This is why I have very little love for places like Geek Squad and other wannabees. First off, I'm partially proud of the geek title, but not entirely. Too many negative connotations with it. Second off, most of the people who work in those places don't know squat on how to handle most major problems. Third off, most of them are POOR in dealing with people.

While I can agree that a lot of users tend to give the impression they are idiots, most of them are just frustrated. After all, think about it. You buy a car, not knowing much about it. You just want it to work enough to take you from point A to point B. Something goes wrong, you feel frustrated because now you feel like part of your life is shattered. I know some wise-guys love to point out how a car is less of a necessity than a PC, but think about how much of an investment here folks. You're still shelling out large amounts of money for something that is beneficial in your life. A car is not a necessity, depending on where you live *for example, NYC. Really not a good reason to own a car if you live there*

However, a thought did occur just now. It seems companies like Microsoft are now wanting the PC to be something like an household appliance. More of a TV in fact. If that is the case, then it's even more important to realize how important it is to try and get the computer to work. No matter the computer intelligence a user may have. The problem though, is that too many people see computer technicians as people to vent their frustrations out on. It's one thing to vent about issues, but don't berate the poor man who's trying to help.

Though there are those who deserve berating. Like I said, reformatting a PC is not always the answer to everything. And when reformatting, PLEASE back their files up!!!
